To The Moon (A Sort-Of Review)

 http://tech.co/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/ToTheMoon.jpg
I've literally just finished playing this game and really needed to share this with everyone.

'To The Moon' is a game that really made me wish I knew how to cry. I was close, and I sort of tried, but I'm not entirely sure how. The game takes between three to four hours of play and is preferably done in one session as while there are gameplay elements the focus is solely on the story.

The cut-scenes are broken up throughout the game and solemly stretch on too long, giving the balence between watching and having to control something quite perfect to not break the feel of the game. Amongst the pixelated art style, it consists of mainly point and click based pixel hunts that are not difficult and each piece of information you find adds further to the story - beyond this the main interaction is a couple of mini-games and very basic puzzles that are very easy to figure out when you get used to them - overall, there was only one small part of the game that I wasn't sure about and that's simply because it felt slightly out of place after a very emotional scene, but I digress.

I'll be sure to avoid spoilers, because I demand that you go and play this game when you're able to. This is honestly a game anyone could play as it doesn't require skill, as I say, it's mostly a story. The premise starts a bit into the future when people have the ability to go into your mind and manipulate your memories, which is used as a profession so that people on their death beds can 'have any wish granted to them' by changing past memories so that their life (in their head) took a different course. Personally, I'm not sure how I feel about this concept, as I put a lot of value into real life - but that's the idea.

So in the game, you play as two scientists who have been given a patient of a man who barely has days to live and he wants his wish granted to go 'to the moon'. From there you regress through the man's memories, using special items to travel further back - as a result you get to see the man's real memories play out in reverse order. Very slowly, you really start to get involved with the characters and the old man's story really becomes both emotional and interesting. Herein lies the problem, the game peeks at about three quarters through the game, there is a heart breaking scene where you string all of the pieces together in your head and it's really just...wow.

As far as stories go, I've scarce seen a better executed story unravel and I was with it longer than a film but less so than a book. Between the emotions there is some humour, fun characters and 4th wall breaking, to keep you as interested as possible. So to anyone who has a heart, I strongly recommend this game. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go and lie down in a dark room for a while.

Lycanthropy (Night Time Knowledge)

As many of you already know, sleep has always been a large issue of mine, which can be made note in evidence for that I am writing this at 4:17am on a Monday morning with lectures in 7 hours. However, it cannot be helped, because you see my friends - I have a giant confession to make.

I... I'm... I'm a werewolf. That is to say half man half wolf that only appears when the moon is full. Which makes it rather difficult to type with this gosh blasted claws...

Well, okay, as untrue as that may be I figured that rather than maintain the dull ache in my head from inability to sleep I'd maintain my, quite frankly, disgusting sleep hygiene by having a cup of tea and writing about nighttime myths and facts. You're so bloody welcome.

  • Warm drinks in a mug, much like malted milk drinks are by far the best things to relax you for sleeping properly. It's suggested that this is less to do with the content and more the warmth of the mug at night time mimicking human warmth to give a relaxed frame of mind. (How cute)
    • While technically Tea and Coffee would have this effect, it doesn't take a genius to know the caffeine will counter balance the quite frankly placebo effect.
    • Milk will be able to do the job, but dairy products take longer through your digestive system and so can keep you awake longer by your body unable to sleep. *shrug* Sleep hygiene is a bitch.
  •  Werewolves and Lycanthrope are not necessarily the same thing. While being a werewolf can be considered a form of lycanthropy, it is usually limited to being turned into a werewolf only on a full moon whereas Lycanthrope are considered to be able to control the transformation.
    • Though in hindsight, this might only be in part of a fantasy book I've read. I might do a little more research on this.
  • It is suggested that the natural sleep / wake cycle is 25 hours long instead of 24 (No wonder everything is fucked.) This is probably because it used to be even longer as a form of protection to keep our energy and be as still as possible after we've fed.
    • That can only suggest that if left to it's own devices, humans would only need very little sleep as it no longer has most of the benefits it has to other animals.
  • Much like reproduction, lots of different animals sleep in different ways. Dolphins sleep using only one hemisphere of the brain at a time so they they are always partially awake. Ants are thought to sleep little and often. Many deep sea creatures form of sleeping is just to shut down desires or motivation as their reaction functions are automatic so they lie perfectly still in a form of sleep ready to wake when they're triggered.
And there you have it, all the night time knowledge I could be bothered to think of in this session.

*Shrug* Kept me busy.

Ciao for now!
